Notes: On May 19, 1966, The Beatles went into EMI`s Abbey Road Studios and filmed a number of promo videos for "Paperback Writer"
and "Rain" - their new single. The director for all of the filming was Michael Lindsay-Hogg. These promos would be for
broadcast in both America and Europe. All promos were filmed on video tape. They began with the filming of two colour promos
(one for each song) that were exclusively for broadcast in America on "The Ed Sullivan Show". They also taped a special
introduction for them as well. At 10am a camera rehearsal took place then they filmed a mimed performance of "Rain" after which
they filmed a mimed performance of "Paperback Writer" from 1:10 - 2:00pm.Both of these colour "indoor" promos were broadcast
on June 5, 1966 and to our knowledge were never screened again on television until the 1990`s.The original edits of these two
colour "indoor" promos for "Paperback Writer" & "Rain" were beautifully restored and re-mastered for inclusion on the "1+" Blu-ray in November 2015.

Notes: On this day in May 1966 The Beatles filmed a number of promo videos for "Paperback Writer" and "Rain" - their new single.
These promos would be for broadcast in America and Europe. All promos were filmed onto video tape.In the afternoon they taped
"Paperback Writer" and "Rain" in black and white for use on "Thank Your Lucky Stars" and "Ready Steady Go" in the UK.
Firstly they filmed four takes of "Paperback Writer".The first take was aired on "Thank Your Lucky Stars" (aka "Goodbye Lucky Stars").
The second and third takes were edited together for screening on "Ready Steady Go". The fourth take seems to have never been used.
After their initial broadcasts on UK TV these promos were never broadcast again to our knowledge.The first time most Beatles
collectors got to see one of these promos was when "Take 1" began being traded on VHS video back in the 1980`s with the story
being that it had come from a copy of Ringo`s very own video tape that had been made for him by EMI in England. The overall
quality of this tape was fairly bad and that`s being generous. The bad quality was no doubt mostly due to it being many
generations from Ringo`s actual copy by the time it started being traded although EMI`s archive at the time wasn`t that
wonderful when you look at what they had for their "Long & Winding Road" doco. Eventually with the dawn of DVD trading, this
tape, though still in terrible quality, was released in 2007 by the MCP label as "Ringo's Private Reel". However back in 1992
we`d already knew that 4 takes of "Paperback Writer" and 2 takes of "Rain" had been filmed that day thanks to Mark Lewisohn`s
research but we weren`t holding out much hope of seeing all of those takes until in 2004 when the first 3 takes of "Paperback
Writer" appeared on Picture Perfect`s "Chronology" 2 volume DVD set.After that the floodgates seemed to open with better
quality versions, even with their slates/clocks, escaping every couple of years.

The Chiswick House Promos

The next day, May 20, 1966, The Beatles and the Intertel film crew went to Chiswick House, an 18th century house and gardens in
West London, to shoot one more promo film each for "Paperback Writer" and "Rain". Both were shot on 35mm colour film. The
film for "Paperback Writer" was more or less a straightforward performance with most of the film devoted to The Beatles miming
in the statue garden.The film for "Rain" followed The Beatles wandering about the grounds of Chiswick House as well as
footage of children at play around one of the house`s cedar trees, making that promo slightly more interesting than just a
straight mimed performance.Both films were mimed performances and despite being filmed in colour were aired in black and white
on "Top of The Pops", as the BBC had yet to make the shift to colour. The Chiswick promo film for "Paperback Writer" debuted
on June 2, 1966 on the show, while the Chiswick promo film for "Rain" debuted on June 9, 1966 on the same TV show.
In 1996 the "Paperback Writer" promo was remastered and re-edited using previously unseen outtakes then distributed around the
World to promote "The Beatles Anthology 3" CD.In 2003 the "Rain" promo was remastered and re-edited using previously unseen
outtakes then distributed around the World to promote "The Beatles Anthology" DVD.New edits of both "Paperback Writer"
& "Rain" were restored and re-mastered for inclusion on the "1+" Blu-ray in November 2015.
